Nykøbing

The locals have been fishing for mussels for centuries, and they are incredibly proud of it. In spring and summer, the area comes alive with mussel festivals, and enormous sculptures of mussels crafted by local sculptors can be found in the harbors and along the shores of villages. The harbor in the town of Nykøbing is home to the fishing company, led by Poul Kærgaard. His family has been fishing for mussels for generations.

Nykøbing

The harbor town of Nykøbing is located on the island of Mors in the Limfjord. The small and colorful mussel boats in the old harbor offer a fantastic sight. It is the home of the fishing company Vilsund, which became the world's first MSC-certified mussel fishery in 2010. With dedicated employees, they catch and produce those flavorful, artisanally smoked mussels.

Mussels

"We harvest our wild mussels in the traditional way."

Poul Kærgaard's family has been fishing for mussels for generations. Now, he is responsible for overseeing a sizable operation. But Poul is not your typical manager. He loves his craft. He prefers to don his overalls and regularly go out himself to harvest the mussels. That's why he works closely with biologists to ensure that fishing doesn't disrupt the mussel population. In addition, Poul is involved in various educational projects about mussel fishing in the Limfjord to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable fishing practices for everyone!
