Masala mussels
Masala is a blend of various spices; yellow in color, and originally from India. Many people associate mussels with being "traditionally" cooked, and served with bread or fries. However, mussels have so much more potential. Masala mussels, for example – an exciting twist on the classic steamed mussels! Like most people, at Fish Tales, we can’t wait for mussel season. That’s why we spend the whole year coming up with the most delicious creations, like these masala mussels. Mussels have a salty, fresh-sweet taste, and the aromatic flavours of masala give this dish a unique twist.
Rinse the mussels and remove any damaged ones. Warm 4 tablespoons of oil in a large saucepan or wok over medium heat.
Cook the onion, garlic, and chilli pepper for about 5 minutes until they become translucent and soft. Stir regularly to prevent the vegetables from browning.
Add the curry leaves and ginger, lower the heat, and cook for a few more minutes.
Now add the chilli powder, coriander and turmeric powder. Stir well and after two minutes, add the tomato. Season with black pepper.
Now add the mussels, stir well, and cover the pan with a lid. Check occasionally to give them a stir, and to see if the mussels are open.
Serve the mussels as soon as all the shells have opened and garnish with coriander leaves. Serve with naan bread and, if desired, cooked white rice.
