Cod
- step 1 -An island full of fish

In Iceland, everything revolves around fishing. Cod, in particular, is the star of the show. This is also true for Theodor, our ambassador from Grindavík. As a child, he already joined his grandparents, later he followed his father. Now, as captain of the Vésteinn, he sails the calm Icelandic waters with a small crew. Summer or winter, cod is caught there all year round. And in Iceland, this is strictly regulated: everything caught is landed and registered, so that fish stocks remain healthy. This ensures that no more fish is ever caught than nature can handle.

- step 2 -Patience and craftsmanship

Theodor and his crew often depart at the end of the day. About 20 to 25 miles offshore, they set their lines: sometimes as long as 12 miles, with thousands of hooks, into the North Atlantic Sea. The whole process can take up to 2.5 hours. It requires experience and a feel for the sea – knowledge that Theodor has built up over many years.

- step 3 -Back to the harbor

After a trip of sometimes up to 20 hours, the crew returns to port with their catch. The cod is fully utilized - and a real treasure is hidden in its belly cavity: the liver. This goes directly to processing – also in Iceland – where it is carefully prepared for consumption. This way, the journey from sea to product is short and the quality remains optimal.

For Theodor, captaincy is in his blood.

As a child, he already went with his grandfather and grandmother who – exceptionally for that time – simply went out to sea. Later, he followed his father. Now he's at the helm himself as captain. “I went along with my grandparents as a child – that's how it begins.” His bond with the sea goes even further. He is named after a captain who once rescued his grandfather. After a week adrift at sea, his grandfather, along with three others, was found by a passing ship. Years later, that captain appeared in his grandfather’s dream – with one request: name him Theodor. Theodor has now been fishing for more than twenty years and works with a small crew at sea around Iceland. Life at sea is intense, with long days and little sleep. Yet that is precisely what appeals to him: the peace and quiet. Now his son sometimes joins him on board. This way, the tradition continues.
