Meet Maxine, our salmon fisher(wo)man from Alakanuk, Alaska. The home of the Yup’ik Eskimos. The whole Yup’ik community respects nature and the sea. Maxine and her family also catch the keta salmon sustainably.
When we met Maxine, we were surprised about the respect the entire community has for their land and sea. Keta salmon fishing is extremely important because it is the only paid work for the Yup’ik Eskimos
Every year Maxine and her family sail 1,5 month on a skiff on the Yukon to fish the keta salmon. Sustainability according to Maxine: “You catch fish to stay alive, but never at the expense of nature.”
